The school developed with acoustics in mind – for successful learning and well-being
The ability to concentrate, social behaviour, levels of sick leave among teachers due to illness and successful learning outcomes are all verifiably linked to the acoustic situation in the classroom. Despite the obvious meaning good acoustics in a room have on learning success at school, this aspect often plays a secondary role when building schools. Consequently, the acoustic quality of classrooms often exhibit considerable deficits: they echo, speech intelligibility is unsatisfactory, the basic noise level is too high.
According to DIN 18041 “Acoustic quality in small to medium-size rooms” the reverberation time in an average-sized classroom should be about 0.5 s.
However, available measurements show that this value is exceeded by a significant margin in many schools and kindergarten rooms – and is none too seldom above the noise level forbidden in industrial workplaces. Excessive reverberation times lead to poor speech intelligibility and cause the basic noise level prevailing in a classroom to increase. Relaxed learning, teaching and communicating is no longer possible under the high load values; impaired mental performance is only to be expected. In cases such as these refurbishment is necessary to upgrade the acoustic quality of the rooms by installing sound absorbing walls and/or ceiling cladding. The cladding reduces the reverberation time.
Immediately noticeable effects are an improvement in speech intelligibility and a reduction in the basic noise level, which in turn creates a pleasant working atmosphere in the classroom. Lahnau Akustik has a wide range of sound absorbing wall and ceiling solutions as well as a great depth of experience in designing acoustic solutions in schools and kindergartens. Good acoustic conditions are fundamental to good speech and syllable intelligibility. In this field Lahnau Akustik is able to call on the many years of experience gained by our predecessor company Wilhelmi to add to the state-of-the-art acoustic building materials we have developed. As a result, an acoustics simulator was developed in close cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute; this makes it possible to simulate room acoustics before the rooms are built. That makes it possible to optimize the acoustics in the room in the context of its social environment, including taking into consideration the resulting costs. To take account of the current budget we developed a solution with our acoustic material, which in addition to a low build also requires a minimum amount of work to install.
That is an ideal solution, in particular for refurbishments. Our objective is to offer you the possibility to use the ecologically friendly building material glass, despite a low budget; because in addition to its acoustic properties it also fulfils the highest fire protection requirements.
